A milestone in the development of sleep medicine in Singapore was the formation of the Singapore Sleep Society (SSS). Propelled by an increasing awareness of sleep science in Singapore, various experts banded together to form this society in the year 2002. It aims to promote research, give support to patients, and educate the public and medical community.
Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in our people and the SSS hopes to help deliver the highest standards of care for patients with sleep disorders by setting high professional standards. Sleep research started in Singapore in a humble makeshift laboratory in 1985, and has made great strides in recent years with Neurologists, Respiratory physicians, ENT surgeons, Psychiatrists, Psychologists and Dental surgeons getting together to form this society. Sleep research is inextricably tied to scientific measurement of sleep and wakefulness. Through this website we hope to reach the public to educate them on sleep disorders and where to go to for their problems of sleep. Many hitherto mysterious discomforts of patients are being seen as undiscovered sleep apnea syndrome, Restless Legs Syndrome and Narcolepsy. Patients need our help to find respite from insomnia, daytime sleepiness and fatigue. I wish Singapore Sleep Society all the success it needs.
